Celebrating a decade of Lyryx with Open Texts for Linear Algebra!

ONE open textbook

TEN years of learning

In 2012, Lyryx pivoted to a new business model; one involving a total disruption of the traditional higher education publishing industry. Our mission to develop accessible and affordable course materials of high-quality to instructors and students worldwide began with one textbook:

A First Course in Linear Algebra

an Open Text

The original text, by Kenneth Kuttler of Brigham Young University, made possible by funding from The Saylor Foundation’s Open Textbook Challenge, launched Lyryx as a full-service publisher for higher education mathematics courses.

Given Lyryx’s roots in mathematics (both founders are university mathematics professors), the match with our high-quality online homework/ exam platform was ideal. With a free textbook and affordable assessment, Lyryx was able to set off on their mission of access and affordability.

Fast forward to 10 years later – the text has:

  • Seen 6 revisions, including the latest 2023-A.
  • Been featured in countless open text repositories and libraries.
  • Been used by ~40,000 students with Lyryx online assessment.
  • Made learning linear algebra accessible to thousands more around the world.

This text has seen contributions from many internal and external sources over the past decade, but Lyryx is immeasurably grateful to Kenneth Kuttler and other substantial contributors including Ilijas Farah of York University, and the Version 2023-A subject matter contributor Chris Leary of SUNY Geneseo.

Here’s to another 10 years of open with “A First Course in Linear Algebra”!

ABOUT THIS TEXTBOOK

A First Course in Linear Algebra, originally by K. Kuttler, has been redesigned by the Lyryx editorial team as a first course for the general students who have an understanding of basic high school algebra and intend to be users of linear algebra methods in their profession, from business & economics to science students.

All major topics of linear algebra are available in detail, as well as justifications of important results. In addition, connections to topics covered in advanced courses are introduced. The textbook is designed in a modular fashion to maximize flexibility and facilitate adaptation to a given course outline and student profile.

Each chapter begins with a list of student learning outcomes, and examples and diagrams are given throughout the text to reinforce ideas and provide guidance on how to approach various problems. Suggested exercises are included at the end of each section, with selected answers at the end of the textbook.
